When enquiring into genealogy, family history, and/or local history etc. you'll find that most locations in Denmark are identified from the County (Danish: ~Amt), District (Danish: ~Herred), or Parish (Danish: Sogn) in which they are located. For practical purposes the 24 Counties which existed from 1793 to 1970 are used.

These Counties are:

  • Aabenraa
  • Aalborg
  • Aarhus
  • Bornholm
  • Frederiksborg
  • Haderslev
  • Holbæk
  • Hjørring
  • København
  • Maribo
  • Odense
  • Præstø
  • Randers
  • Ribe
  • Ringkøbing
  • Roskilde
  • Skanderborg
  • Sorø
  • Svendborg
  • Sønderborg
  • Thisted
  • Tønder
  • Vejle
  • Viborg

Although Denmark are still subdivided into about 2.200 parishes, both counties and district are now only historic administrative units, and locations in a non-historic context are mostly identified by smallest administrative unit in present-day Denmark: the municipality.
